So I arrived on campus on Thursday, and I was actually delayed about 6 hours (I arrived at 7, but was supposed to arrive at 1) because we had a malfunction in our darn WINDSHIELD WIPERS. I was stuck in an auto-repair shop in Strousbridge (?) for about 5 hours, and it did not make me happy. But yea, when I finally arrived, I registered and met up with my host at Burton 5th (the quiet floor), and ate dinner with her at Baker Hall. It was actually pretty good food, considering that I had not eaten all day. BTW, TechCash is awesome, and we had $20.11 in honor of our 2011 class! (Later I was told that we were jipped because previous prefrosh had gotten about $40 for the weekend, but whatever). (Hands down, Ner d Heaven) We also met Matt McGann, and we overheard two guys talking to Matt, whom I thought were pretty funny. One was leaving on Friday to go to prom. He was single. The other one decided to stay for CPW, even though he had a girlfriend. Matt was like what the heck, that doesnt sound right. Yes Matt, I concur. Curiously enough, I managed to encounter four people who worked in my research lab over the summer it was basically a research reunion! Then, we then headed over the French house to have some scrumptious midnight snacks and hot chocolate so delicious! But yes, after all the excitement I managed to return to BC and sleep by 2 am (even if most of the students were still up doing an 18.03 p-set). At first when they said Logarhythms I thought it was spelled normally and then maybe after about half an hour I realized err yea. Some highlights from Friday include the welcome from Susan Hockfield/Marilee Jones/keynote speaker and the activities and academics fair, where I learned so much about potential majors, and got this really cool T-shirt from the visual arts center booth. Speaking of the visual arts center, we passed by the building with the black, red and yellow squares that are considered art. I mean, after hearing the wonderful hacking story of the mysterious mint square, youd think that it was a really big monument or something. But alas, contrary to popular belief, these squares are well. Youll see in the picture below. Later, I ate dinner at a sorority called Sigma Kappa, and gaped at how spotless the place was compared to my room. Speaking of which, I havent unpacked thoroughly yet the suitcase is still in the center of my room. Lastly, of course, one could never forget the fruity thing in Lobby 7 Marilee Jones! Just because shes awesome like that. President Susan Hockfield. Inspirational. She reminded of us why we were special. Even if we thought we got in by mistake. Me: I went to CPW and all I got was this free t-shirt! Fangfei: Youve GOT to be kidding me. (In reference to the mysterious mint square hack) And of course one could not to go CPW without going Dorm Touring! Fangfei 11, Drew 11 and I (as well as various other people we encountered throughout the day) headed off bright and early on Saturday Morning to Simmons Hall to eat some awesome pancakes and French toast for breakfast, accompanied by delicious smoothies. After that, Fangfei left me to go home, but alas I was whisked off to eat dinner with an old friend (current student) who I attended high school with. She also took me to a party at Phi Delta, which was a pretty cool exper ience, especially since they were really good about staying dry (alcohol-free). Before I went back to my dorm though, I made a quick stop at MacGregor convenience to use up the rest of my TechCash (there was so much free food over the weekend, it was insane). Oh btw, apparently theres this myth that the weather is supposed to be rainy for CPW weekend, but it always clears up for us prefrosh. Well, the rain did clear up on Friday and Saturday, only to return on Sunday morning (haha, just in time for the Boston marathon!). But yes, I had a lot of fun, and let me tell you MIT, you have stolen my soul and Ill have to look for again this August when I come up to Cambridge. Ahhh I was so wiped out that I just slept the entire drive back and luckily no breakdowns this time. *Just a note! In discussing Kate Chopins novel, The Awakening, critic Susan Rosowski categorizes the novel under the heading of the novel of awakening and differentiates it from the bildungsroman, the apprentice novel, in which the usually male protagonist learn the nature of the world, discover its meaning and pattern, and acquire a philosophy of life and ‘the art of living (Bloom 43). In the novel of awakening, the female protagonist similarly learns about the world, but for the heroine, the world is defined in terms of love and marriage, and the art of living comes with a realization that such art is difficult or impossible; the price for the art is often tragic endings. For our eighth group session, we celebrated the ending of our group counseling session at Sushi King in Norfolk, Virginia. In my own past experiences when growing up, the people I have chosen as friends weren’t always the coolest, or craziest, but they were always good for their word. These types of friends are valuable for positive peer pressure and are important to keep. Friends, as it is seen, are a major source of peer pressure that one encounters when growing up. I believe from past experiences, friends have the strongest influence on us.   The effects from our friends can sometimes be really good or truly bad. If one friend brings the bottle to the hang out and tells another teen to try it because it is â€Å"so cool,† he or she will experiment with it not knowing what effects it can lead to. One of the reasons that our society finds it difficult to handle teen’s drug use is because adolescent culture does not consist of â€Å"one uniform, homogeneous group.† (Miller, 107). Teens and children are also having sex at a young age because most of their friends may be doing the same thing.   They want to fit in and be part of the â€Å"in-crowd† so they will not follow what they feel is right and so they will take part in sexual behavior in order to be â€Å"cool.† Sex is just one issue that adolescents are faced with. Customer Satisfaction One of the most pervasive definitions of customer satisfaction arises from the expectation confirmation-disconfirmation model. This model holds that customer satisfaction is the outcome of expected product performance against actual product performance (Armstrong et al., 2014). Accordingly, customer satisfaction occurs when the actual performance of the product matches the performance expected by the customer. Siddiqi (2011) highlights disconfirmation as the aggregate of discrepancies between the expected performance and actual performance paradigms. Here, positive disconfirmation occurs when the products performance exceeds the customers expectations, while negative disconfirmation occurs when performance falls short of expectations. Where performance matches expectations, this is regarded as zero disconfirmation. Despite this framework, customer satisfaction is not evaluated uniformly amongst all customers. Different consumers consider different factors when evaluating customer satisfaction. Three factors affect customer satisfaction/dissatisfaction. Therefore, social workers must be attuned to cultural, racial, and ethnical differences in people. This will help put an end to discrimination, oppression, poverty, and other types of social wrongs. There are six core values on which the social work profession is based. These are service, social justice, dignity, and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. These core values are the fundamental principles that a social worker should use in dealing with clients and helps guide them in treating the clients with dignity and respect. The social workers Code of Ethics are at the core of the profession. These ethics are of great importance to all social work students as well. They help in making sound judgments and decisions when dealing with all segments of the population regardless of the clients religion, race, or ethnicity. The six core values of social work have ethical principles which are the ideals to which each social worker should strive to meet. My Views of the Ethics and Values Dealing with Worth and Dignity Self-determination is a very important value when dealing with a client. This allows the client, with assistance from the social worker, to identify their goals. The client will feel a sense of ownership in reaching said goals. Privacy and confidentiality also play a huge role in preserving the worth and dignity of someone receiving assistance. Everyone, regardless of their status in society, has a right to privacy. Some clients may not know that they have these rights or may believe that their right to privacy has been forfeited since they are receiving assistance. This, of course, is not true, and the social worker should inform the client of this fact. The social worker also has to realize that not all of the people receiving services are literate and must therefore explain to those clients the disclosure of confidential information. This also pertains to each individuals rights to confidentiality when providing counseling to couples or groups. A social worker should never make advances of a sexual nature to a client. This may lead some clients to believe that the only way that they can receive assistance is to give into those advances. It may also cause others to not seek assistance at all. Derogatory language, either verbal or written, can be demoralizing to a client. A social worker has to be aware of the culture of the person that they are addressing. What may not be significant to the social worker may, on the other hand, be offensive to the client. The decision-making process varies from client to client. The social worker must make sure that when he or she is acting of behalf of a client that the clients interests and rights are safe guarded. Respect in the Social Work Code of Ethics is under the ethical responsibilities to colleagues, but it should also be under the way clients should be treated. When one shows respect to another person, communication is greatly enhanced, and communication is what social work revolves around. Discrimination is something that can not and should not be practiced, condoned, or facilitated by a social worker. This means discrimination of any type to include; race, ethnicity, sex, color, marital status, politics, mental disability, immigration status, or sexual orientation. Discrimination has an adverse effect on the client and the social work profession. When a social worker allows their private life to affect their work, no one wins. A social worker must be professional enough to separate the two. Another issue that deals with a social workers professionalism is his or her ability to not take part in any way with deception, dishonesty, or fraud. My Application of the Ethics When dealing with ethnicity, I will learn about what is acceptable and unacceptable with each ethnic group. I will ensure that I differentiate between ethnicity and race. National origin has to be dealt with in a similar way as with ethnicity. Therefore, I will ensure that I am aware of the customs of the clients homeland. Social class requires that a social worker not form preconceived notions of the person being served. I will keep my mind open and ensure, as with all cases, to listen to what is being said. Religion is a very touchy subject that has to be handled. I will make every effort to understand the customs and traditions of various religious groups in order not to offend. When dealing with a client that has a physical or mental disability, I will ensure that their dignity and worth is not compromised. I will use language that they can easily understand, and I will not talk down to the individual. Everyone has the right to live their life they way that they choose. I will never judge a client based on their sexual orientation. This and the previous subjects can be handled by simply being a professional. I will strive to be a consummate professional at all times.
