Edna Pontellier and Social Limitations in Kate Chopins...

In discussing Kate Chopins novel, The Awakening, critic Susan Rosowski categorizes the novel under the heading of the novel of awakening and differentiates it from the bildungsroman, the apprentice novel, in which the usually male protagonist learn the nature of the world, discover its meaning and pattern, and acquire a philosophy of life and ‘the art of living (Bloom 43). In the novel of awakening, the female protagonist similarly learns about the world, but for the heroine, the world is defined in terms of love and marriage, and the art of living comes with a realization that such art is difficult or impossible; the price for the art is often tragic endings. Rosowski calls this female awakening an awakening to†¦show more content†¦The remedy to the light source problem, I think, is to base the discussion on a few basic Buddhist philosophical concepts, rather than on Buddhisms ethical precepts, a few of which Edna Pontellier has certainly violated. Commenting on sexua l intercourse in general, the Buddha is recorded to have said, A wise man should avoid unchastity as if were a pit of burning cinders. One who is not able to live in a state of celibacy should, at least, not break the purity of another mans wife (Saddhatissa 88). However, on the philosophical level, especially in analyzing the realizations that eventually lead Edna to her final swim, the novel can be read as a persons quest for nirvana, the final release from the cycle of reincarnations as a result of the extinction of ignorance and cessation of suffering. Nirvana comes at the end to a successful exploration of the meaning of life that examines three Buddhist concepts: impermanence/change (anitya), suffering/unsatisfactoriness (duhkha), and non-self/nonessentiality (anatman) (Bercholz 84). These three concepts are referred to in Buddhist texts as the three marks of existence, the three facts of life. Proper acknowledgment of these three facts depends on a solid understanding of two fundamental Buddhist concepts: attachment/craving (trishna) and ignorance (avidya). Although the end of Edna Pontelliers exploration leads her to death, seen in the Buddhist light, her fate can be read symbolicallyShow MoreRelatedKate Chopins The Awakening: Womens Role In Society Essay1504 Words   |  7 Pagesof them? Adolescents How Society Affects Them Free Essays

As we all already know that adolescence is the developmental stage between childhood and adulthood, generally referring to a period ranging from age 11 and 19. Adolescence has many psychological and social stages, as well as biological. Because it is filled with constant changes and uncertainty, the risks of losing the sight of the right path is quite high. We will write a custom essay sample on Adolescents How Society Affects Them or any similar topic only for you Order Now Let me talk about how and who affects them. As children grow, develop, and move into early adolescence, involvement with one’s peers increases. In order to be included in a group of friends they are easily swayed to do something wrong. They are faced with decisions to try new things, such as drugs, changing fashion, slang words, alcohol, sex etc.   The use of drugs by teenagers is the result of a combination of factors such as peer pressure, curiosity, and availability (Cotterell, 135).   Peers are the ones who most frequently initiate one another into drug use. Family members are the most important source of peer pressure. I believe family is the most influential foundation for several reasons. For one, peer pressure is encountered first at home. The mother and father play the biggest role in our lives because they teach their children right from wrong. For example, as a child my parents would always warn me about a girl whom I hung out with and lived in my neighborhood. They advised me a million times to not associate with her because they thought she was â€Å"bad news.† Similarly, religious institutions are another great source of influence. The young adults that participate in religious institutions, come from families which are not into drugs, alcohol, violence, or any sort of crime. So the effects these religious institutions have are great on young people in society. Religious adolescents can encourage one another to be successful in school, sports, and other activities. In my own past experiences when growing up, the people I have chosen as friends weren’t always the coolest, or craziest, but they were always good for their word. These types of friends are valuable for positive peer pressure and are important to keep. Friends, as it is seen, are a major source of peer pressure that one encounters when growing up. I believe from past experiences, friends have the strongest influence on us.   The effects from our friends can sometimes be really good or truly bad. If one friend brings the bottle to the hang out and tells another teen to try it because it is â€Å"so cool,† he or she will experiment with it not knowing what effects it can lead to. One of the reasons that our society finds it difficult to handle teen’s drug use is because adolescent culture does not consist of â€Å"one uniform, homogeneous group.† (Miller, 107). Teens and children are also having sex at a young age because most of their friends may be doing the same thing.   They want to fit in and be part of the â€Å"in-crowd† so they will not follow what they feel is right and so they will take part in sexual behavior in order to be â€Å"cool.† Sex is just one issue that adolescents are faced with. Consumption of alcohol is another factor that can lead to bad decisions based on the friendships that they make. Choosing the friends one hangs out with can sometimes be difficult.   Even though we know what is right from wrong we still have the tendency to do the wrong thing. Even though there are a lot of negative effects from friend’s influences, there are just as many positive effects too. I believe the right friends can push one to doing the right things such as belonging to a soccer team or joining the band club. In conclusion, peer pressure is always surrounding us and affecting us. Our friends, family members, and religious institutions are the main sources in which peer pressure comes from. With the proper guidance and right choice of friends, one will not have any trouble with life’s difficult decisions, and will hopefully do the right thing when faced with difficult problems. Adolescence is a powerful time in one’s life with an array of chances to ruin a bright future, so I guess forewarned is forearmed. Effects of Customer Satisfaction on Productivity Study of Dick Smith

Question: Describe the Effects of Customer Satisfaction on Productivity for Study of Dick Smith. Answer: Introduction The focus of this literature review is Dick Smith, an online retailer of electronic goods. Dick Smith was founded in 1968 by Dick Smith in Sydney, Australia(Dicksmith.com, 2016). The initial focus of the store was installing and servicing car radios. As demand grew, the store moved to a bigger premise. With growing demand for electronic products, the store began wholesaling electronics through Dick Smith Wholesale, which ran alongside the car radio business. In 1980, Dick Smith sold 60% of the company to Woolworths, and two years later the remaining 40%. The total cost of the sale amounted to A$25 million. The store continued to expand its operations across Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the Dick Smith, stores were David Jones electronics, which were powered by Dick Smith stores, and Dick Smith Powerhouse super-stores. In May 2016, Dick Smith was acquired by Kogan.com. Today, the company operates wholly as an online retailer, with no physical stores. It deals with a variet y of electronic and technological products from major brands around the world. The focus of this research is on the effects of customer satisfaction on productivity and profitability at Dick Smith. Customer satisfaction is important for any business, since it influences customer retention, customer loyalty and return purchases. Moreover, since consumers often communicate amongst themselves, customer satisfaction also influences new customer perceptions. In this manner, customer satisfaction further affects the productivity of an enterprise. By improving customer satisfaction, enterprises can be able to improve productivity and profitability, hence the choice of this topic. Literature regarding customer satisfaction and its effects is reviewed, with a focus on factors that lead to customer satisfaction particularly in the retail industry. Moreover, since the organization chosen is an online retailer, the literature review will also investigate factors that influence customer satisfaction within an online retail environment. Finally, the literature review will al so focus on the effects of customer satisfaction, through an evaluation of the impacts of satisfaction on productivity and profitability. The review will not concern itself with employee satisfaction or online commerce in general. Literature review Customer satisfaction is an important topic in the literature on business and retail marketing. Armstrong et al., (2014) identify customer satisfaction as an essential component of the marketing concept. Among other things, it influences the future purchase behavior of consumers, profitability, and value for shareholders. Customer satisfaction is therefore in the best interest of all organizational stakeholders. Customer Satisfaction One of the most pervasive definitions of customer satisfaction arises from the expectation confirmation-disconfirmation model. This model holds that customer satisfaction is the outcome of expected product performance against actual product performance (Armstrong et al., 2014). Accordingly, customer satisfaction occurs when the actual performance of the product matches the performance expected by the customer. Siddiqi (2011) highlights disconfirmation as the aggregate of discrepancies between the expected performance and actual performance paradigms. Here, positive disconfirmation occurs when the products performance exceeds the customers expectations, while negative disconfirmation occurs when performance falls short of expectations. Where performance matches expectations, this is regarded as zero disconfirmation. Despite this framework, customer satisfaction is not evaluated uniformly amongst all customers. Different consumers consider different factors when evaluating customer satisfaction. Three factors affect customer satisfaction/dissatisfaction. The first is the quality of the product, the second the quality of service, and the last is price. This is corroborated by Pilar et al. (2010), who indicate that for some customers, their satisfaction will occur if the quality of the product/service is above par, while for others, satisfaction will be based on the price charged for the product or service. Price affects different customers in different ways. For some customers, they will be satisfied when the price is cheap and affordable while for others, the price should be in accordance to the quality provided. Evaluation of customer satisfaction is therefore, also influenced by the nature of the industry (product or service). Factors promoting customer satisfaction in the retail industry As noted, customer satisfaction is influenced by the nature of the industry. Studies into customer satisfaction have identified several factors as promoting and affecting customer satisfaction. According to Baker and Cameron (2015), waiting time is a critical factor. In this study, the authors focused on directing management to establish a service environment that reduces waiting time, hence improving service evaluation by consumers. Other factors such as unique product and service offerings, friendliness of the customer service personnel, hassle free parking space, value added services such as free delivery, and guidelines on product use also contribute to customer satisfaction. Customer Staisfaction in the online retail environment The above-mentioned factors are important in improving customer satisfaction for a retailer such as Dick Smith. Given its transition to an online platform, however, the customer satisfaction paradigm has also shifted. While some aspects of customer satisfaction within an online retail environment are consistent with traditional retail store satisfaction factors, Souitaris and Balabanis (2007), highlight research indicating antecedent models of satisafction and loyalty within an online environment. They highlight eight key online differentiation strategies that influence e-loyalty, which include choice, care, community, character and customization. Moreover, Kim, Kim, and Kandampully (2009) point out that within an e-retailing environment, the quality of e-service is a key factor. Their study investigates the relationship between the online buying environment characteristics and e-satisafction amongst consumers. They find that attributes of the buying environment such as convenience, web appearance and entertainment value directly affect e-satsiafction amongst consumers. In another study, Hung, Chen and Huang (2014) conducted a survey of four online retailers, to determine the factors that influence customer satisfaction. Their findings were that customer satisfaction is influenced by a combination of both marketing and technical factors. Some of the marketing factors included consumer attitudes towards online shopping, perceived risk and convenience, and electronic word-of-mouth marketing. The technical factors identified were such as the quality of the information system, with regard to such factors as ease of access and user-friendliness of the websites. The advent of e-retailing has radically altered the manner in which customers evaluate satisfaction. Impact of customer satisfaction Customer satisfaction is evidently a complex phenomenon, particularly in the current era of online retailing. Yet, customer satisfaction is an important factor, with various studies revealing that it significantly affects retailing. According to Armstrong et al. (2014), there is a positive correlation between customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. This in turn leads to the improved perfromance of the company. Kim, Kim, and Kandampully (2009) corroborate this finding for the online retail environment, indicating that increased e-satisfaction leads to improved e-loyalty. Customer satisfaction also leads to increased benefits such as reduced advertising costs, enhanced profitability and income (Armstrong, Adam, Denize, Kotler, 2014). Satisfied customers not only become repeat customers, they also become willing partners and customer evangelists, who share their positive experiences with others(Armstrong, Adam, Denize, Kotler, 2014). Thus, customer satisfaction can improve profita bility through a number of avenues, such as reduced advertising costs and increased sales. Customer satisfaction alone, however, is not sufficient to guarantee the success of a retail business in the long term. Consequently, there is a need for continual customer relationship management to improve the competitiveness of the enterprise. A less investigated relationship in the literature is that of the impact of customer satisfaction on productivity. Luo and Homburg (2007) investigate whether customer satisfaction has any impact of employee performance. Their results indicate that customer satisfaction is indeed positively related to human capital performance. Consequently, investing in improved customer satisfaction can lead to improved productivity and better performance by employees. This would be a significant factor, since employee satisfaction has been proven to contribute to customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. Customer satisfaction is important for any industry, particularly in todays competitive global business environment. Dick Smith operates in one of the most competitive business lines, the online retail business. The competitiveness of this industry is underscored by the fact that customers can easily switch between various retailers through a few simple clicks of the mouse(Souitaris Balabanis, 2007). Consequently, this makes it imperative that businesses are well equipped to attract and retain consumers. Customer satisfaction allows businesses such as Dick Smith to do so. Through customer satisfaction, Dick Smith can be able to retain existing customers and attract new ones through positive word of mouth. Customer satisfaction will be an important feature in enabling Dick Smith to navigate the online retail industry. Based on the above literature review, the following research questions are formulated: How can Dick Smith improve customer satisfaction within an electronic retailing platform? What benefits can Dick Smith hope to derive from improved customer satisfaction in an electronic retailing platform? Conclusion Dick Smith is an online retail store operating in New Zealand and Australia. It was founded in 1968 by Dick Smith as a car radio installation and servicing store. The enterprise later grew into the giant retailer that it is today. It was initially bought out by Woolworths, before its recent takeover by Kogan.com. Today, Dick Smith operates entirely as an online retailer. The online retail market is a highly competitive one, characterized by heavy competition due to low barriers to entry. Moreover, customers are easily able to evaluate alternatives through a few clicks of the mouse. Consequently, this makes customer satisfaction imperative, since such satisfaction also serves as a competitive advantage. The review of literature concerning customer satisfaction reveals that customer satisfaction is promoted by factors such as quality of product, quality of service and brand image. Moreover, customer satisfaction within an online retail environment is even more complex, and is affected by additional factors such as the online retail environment. This refers to the website on which a business transacts, and its features such as ease of access and customization. Investing in customer satisfaction derives a variety of benefits for retailers, such as customer loyalty and customer retention, as well as new customers through word-of-mouth promotions by satisfied consumers. This has the additional benefits of reduced advertising costs and improved productivity. Moreover, customer satisfaction also leads to improved productivity, further improving profitability. In order to harness these benefits, Dick Smith should invest in developing a dominant and formidable online presence. The strategy adopted should include developing a website that is customized to the tastes of electronic and technological shoppers and enthusiasts. Dick Smith should also focus on providing quality customer service. By improving customer satisfaction, Dick Smith can then anticipate increased visits and sales. However, since customer satisfaction alone does not guarantee competitiveness, Dick Smith should continuously engage in customer relationship management. Symbolism Of Macbeth Essay Research Paper The free essay sample

Symbolism Of Macbeth Essay, Research Paper The calamity of Macbeth is filled with dry and symbolic elements. Throughout the drama Shakespeare uses a assortment of clauses to typify both good and evil. The four major images he uses are light and darkness, the figure three, birds, and blood. The contrast of visible radiation and darkness is shown throughout the drama. The visible radiation symbolizes life and felicity, while the darkness symbolizes evil and decease. Before Macbeth slayings Duncan there is a great trade of light shown in the drama. After the slaying the visible radiation bends into darkness, non merely the darkness of decease, nevertheless but besides the darkness of immorality. The slaying has forced Macbeth to suffer from insomnia. After the slaying he states exclaims, ? Sleep no more! /Macbeth does slay kip? # 8230 ; ? Glamis hath murdered slumber, and therefore/Clawdor/Shall sleep no more. Macbeth shall kip no more? ( II, ii,46-47,54-57 ) He can non agitate the memories and guilt he feels about slaying Duncan. Lady Macbeth besides suffers from the darkness. At first she is non affected by the slaying ; nevertheless in the terminal she is the individual who suffers the most. In the concluding yearss of her life, Lady Macbeth start to kip walk. She is unable to fell from the deep horrors of the darkness and her fright of find. She is afraid of the dark and uses the visible radiation to attempt to conceal from the devils of the dark, in an effort to rid of her devils. In Act V, the physician and the dame ticker Lady Macbeth walk into the visible radiation from the darkness of sleeping: Doctor: ? How came she by that light. # 8221 ; Gentlewoman: # 8221 ; Why, it stood by her. She has light by her continually. # 8216 ; Tis her bid # 8221 ; ( V, i,23-25 ) . Here Lady Macbeth commands that she has light by her at all times, to assist flight from the darkness. The contrast of visible radiation and dark is portrayed so drastically to demo that the workss of darkness, the slaying, overshadow the visible radiation. The figure three is used throughout the drama as a symbol of immorality. The figure itself traditionally is considered to be luckless. The first clip the figure appears is in the 4th scene of the drama with the three enchantresss, or eldritch sisters. First enchantress: ? Thrice the brindled cat that mewed. # 8221 ; Second enchantress: ? Thrice, and one time the hedge-pig whined. # 8221 ; First enchantress: ? Dayss and darks has thirty-one # 8221 ; ( IV, i,1,2,7 ) . Another illustration is the three phantoms give to Macbeth at his 2nd visit with the enchantresss. Macbeth # 8217 ; s name is called three clip before called before they, the enchantresss speak. First Enchantress: ? All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis. ? Second Enchantress: ? All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! ? Third Enchantress: ? All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king afterlife! ? ( I, iii,51-53 ) The word three is shown in other context as good. The Porter in Act II seems to be supplying some amusing alleviation for the audience, but it goes deeper than that. He explains to the audience that the figure three and imbibing does non brand for a good mix. He shows that the two play a major function in the drama. Porter: # 8221 ; # 8230 ; and imbibe, sir, is a great instigator of three things # 8221 ; ( II, iii,25-26 ) . Here he may be mentioning to the three fatal phantom that the three enchantresss are to finally state Macbeth about. Birds besides are mentioned in the drama to typify both good and evil, frequently paralleling the visible radiation and darkness subject. The marlet and Wrens are used to typify goodness, while the Corvus corax and bird of Minerva are used to typify immorality. The Corvus corax, is used to state of the courier that informs Lady Macbeth that King Duncan is coming. Lady Macbeth exclaims, ? The Corvus corax himself is hoarse/That croaks the fatal entryway of Duncan. # 8221 ; Not merely is the Corvus corax # 8217 ; s voice is traditionally thought to be a call of decease, but is besides a symbol of decease itself along with evil and darkness. The bird of Minerva, besides shown as a symbol of darkness and immorality, is used throughout the drama. The bird of Minerva is a bird of the dark and appears many times as an portent of decease and immorality. Once once more Lady Macbeth exclaims: ? It was the bird of Minerva that shrieked, the fatal bellboy, /Which gives the austere # 8217 ; st good-nite # 8221 ; ( II,2,5-6 ) . Again in Act II, in Old Man? s conversation with Ross, he states, ? A falcon, tow? pealing in her pride of topographic point, /Was by a mousing bird of Minerva hawked at and killed. ? ( II, iv,15-16 ) This statement by the Old Man suggests that the dark bird, the bird of immorality and darkness, has eventually struck, with the slaying of Duncan. Then in Act IV, the bird of Minerva comes back to hangout once more, this clip to feed on Lady Macduff: ? The most bantam of birds will contend, /Her immature 1s in her nest, against the owl. ? Lennox negotiations of an? vague bird? that? Clamored the livelong dark? ( II, iii,67-68 ) . One might reason that this? vague bird? that he speaks of is the bird of Minerva. Shakespeare uses blood to typify many events, runing from award for a triumph good won to guilt from malicious slaying of a great male monarch. The first mention to blood we find in the drama portray # 8220 ; blood # 8221 ; as good and honest. King Duncan pronounces # 8220 ; What bloody adult male is that? # 8221 ; ( I, i,1 ) sing an evidently bloody soldier after he has fought a long gurgling conflict to protect Malcolm. The blood here symbolizes goodness and award. A few lines farther, blood is once more shown as a symbol of award. The Captain, mentioning to Macbeth, rejoices with the triumph of their conflict and says, # 8221 ; Contemning Fortune, with brandished steel, /Which smoked with bloody execution. # 8221 ; ( I, ii,19-20 ) These are a few rare happenings in the drama that portray # 8220 ; blood # 8221 ; as good and honest. From this point on the mentions to blood are used to typify immorality, instead than goodness and award. The scene is that of the slaying of King Duncan. After Macbeth slayings Duncan, he returns to his room where the male monarch # 8217 ; s blood has saturated Macbeth # 8217 ; s custodies. Lady Macbeth tells her hubby to travel and border the sleeping guards for the title, # 8220 ; Go, carry them and smear/The sleepy grooms with blood. # 8221 ; ( II, ii,63-64 ) Macbeth does so and he besides tries to rinse his custodies with H2O to unclutter his name of the title, as his married woman had instructed him to make, but is unable to free his scruples of the guilt ; ? Will all great Neptunes? s ocean wash this blood/Clean from my manus? No, this my manus will rather/The countless seas incarnadine # 8230 ; ? ( II, ii,78-80 ) This clip the # 8220 ; blood # 8221 ; symbolizes the evil title of slaying King Duncan. Blood once more, as immorality, appears in Act V. Here Lady Macbeth is enduring from the guilt of the slaying, she says # 8220 ; Out, damned topographic point, out, I say! # 8230 ; Yet who would hold thought the old man/to have had so much blood in him? # 8230 ; Here # 8217 ; s the odor of the blood still. All/the aromas of Arabia will non dulcify this little/hand. O, O, O! # 8221 ; ( V, i,37,41-42,53-55 ) The guilt of the evil slaying has gotten the best of Lady Macbeth and has caused her to hold devils. The guilt seemed to hold overtaken Macbeth at foremost, nevertheless he was able to rid of the feeling. Lady Macbeth on the other manus seemed to non to be shaken by the slaying at first, but in the terminal, the monolithic guilt caused the decease of her. Shakespeare uses a assortment of symbolism to better depict the state of affairss that occur throughout the calamity. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth suffer from the immorality and darkness that is illustrated in the drama, through the usage of symbolism.
